The same spot once housed Trajan's ancient forum: the forum vetus (which later gave Fourvi\u00e8re its name). Its construction was the result of a promise made by the people of Lyon to their archbishop in 1870 to build a basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary on this hill if the city was spared by the Prussians. Begun in December 1872, it was completed in early June 1884 by the architect Sainte-Marie Perrin. The interior of the basilica was not completed until 1964.
Built in a Romanesque-Byzantine style, it has the geographical distinction of overlooking Lyon. Nestling at the top of the Fourvi\u00e8re hill, all you have to do is let your gaze wander to catch a glimpse of the peninsula, Bellecour, the Cours Gambetta and the brand-new, ultra-modern Confluence district. The view stretches as far as the Alps, 160 kilometres away, and weather permitting you can see the trapezoid of Mont-Blanc and the creamy lace of the Vercors, which turns pink at sunset.
Thanks to its visibility and beauty, it is a favourite venue for many cultural events, such as the Festival of Lights, when the countless beams of light shining on it give it an almost divine colour.
